The Crazy Way We Met
Hello friends,
Today I am participating in Marriage Monday . . . where the topic is "The Crazy Way We Met" . . .
I have known my husband pretty much my whole life. In fact, I was 9 months old the first time we met. Our parents were friends - which means that Donnie and I spent quite a bit of time together as babies - even napping in the same crib! Our moms thought we were so cute together and often joked about us growing up and getting married. Little did they know . . . Here are some pictures of us together at my 2nd birthday party with my brother, Steve.

And here is a picture of our first kiss. I am a little mortified about the fact that I was so aggressive . . . but I always joke that I kissed Donnie first! :) Definitely love at first sight!

About a year later, our families went separate ways . . . moving to different states. However, our moms stayed in touch with one another. Then when I was in the second grade, my dad got stationed in the same town as Donnie's family so once again I saw Donnie often . . . Only this time he was more interested in being friends with my brother and I was just someone to chase and harass! :) Needless to say - being the prissy girly-girl that I was - I didn't want anything to do with BOYS and I was annoyed with the fact that they wanted to shoot my Barbies with their GI Joe men! But Donnie was at our house often . . . definitely a part of my childhood. Here is a picture of us at my brothers' 6th birthday party.
Since my dad was in the military, we moved again when I was in the 5th grade - but our moms continued to keep in touch. I can remember visiting with Donnie's family several times over the years - but the last time we saw them was when I was 13.
Fast-forward 7 years . . . It's Christmas time . . . I'm 20 years old . . . going to college . . . just coming off of a 4-year relationship with my high-school sweetheart . . . when my parents get a Christmas card from Donnie's mom telling us that Donnie had joined the military and was recently stationed at the same base as my dad. He was living in the same town! (I look back now and realize what a "God-thing" that was . . . out of all the military bases all over the world - Donnie ended up at the same one as my dad!) So my dad looked Donnie up on base and invited him over for dinner. I can remember my parents telling my brother and I that Donnie was coming for dinner and they wanted us to be there. My brother was thrilled to see his childhood friend . . . and I have to admit that I was a little curious to see Donnie after all these years.
I will never forget that day in January when I saw Donnie again . . . Boy, had he grown up and immediately I felt so attracted to him. We talked all night . . . and I was amazed at how easily our conversation flowed. It didn't take us long to realize that we had a lot in common and we wanted to see each other again.
We spent many nights on the phone getting to know each other . . . and I can remember staying up till 2am every night just talking about life . . . our hopes, our dreams. We started hanging out together often - only as friends - but we always had such a great time.
“True love is friendship -- caught on fire.”
Author Unknown
Then one night while we were talking on the phone, Donnie said,
"Let's go out tomorrow night - on a date."
I gulped. A date. That was different than just hanging out as friends - yet it was what I wanted more than anything.
I can't tell you how nervous I was . . . but we couldn't have had a better 1st date. We just went to the movies . . . but I could feel the excitement and knew that we had taken things to a new level when Donnie reached to hold my hand in the theater. Our date ended at Dairy Queen where we had our first kiss. Needless to say, ice cream got all in my hair . . . but you couldn't wipe the smile off my face and I couldn't deny the JOY in my heart, the butterflies in my stomach and the racing of my heart. It was official . . . I was falling in love! :) That was March 29, 1992 and we have been together ever since.
Here's a little trip down memory lane. It's hard to believe that most of these pictures were taken about 15-16 years ago . . . and they aren't the best quality since they were scanned . . . but they sure do make me smile as I remember that time with Donnie. Time sure does fly by . . . but 16 years and 5 kids later I am still filled with so much love for my husband. Please excuse the big hair . . . my hair is naturally curly - so I did the "big hair thang" quite easily! I know it is a little scary! :)

We've been married for almost 13 years now . . . and Donnie still makes my heart race ;) He is the best God-given gift . . . the best husband . . . my best friend and love . . . my soul mate in life and I love him more everyday. I feel so blessed to be so incredibly happy in my marriage.
In 12 years together we have faced so many trials and hardships . . .
my parents' divorce
the death of 4 grandparents
3 moves in 5 years
triplets and many sleepless nights
childhood cancer
& the loss of our 6 year old son
Yes, we have shared our moments of anger and cried a million tears together. But the hard times have only brought us closer. And I have learned that a good marriage needs 5 things . . .
friendship,
fun,
respect,
faith,
but most of all, LOVE!
fun,
respect,
faith,
but most of all, LOVE!

And despite the hard times, we have never lost sight of our blessings . . .
our faith
a God who loves us
5 beautiful children
a family who supports us
& our love for each other.
I am so thankful that our families kept in touch over the years.
I am so thankful for the crazy way we met when we were babies!
And I thank God for my husband every single day . . .
"What greater thing is there for two human souls than to feel that they are joined... to strengthen each other... to be at one with each other in silent unspeakable memories."
~ George Eliot

Ending with a scripture . . .

So thankful for the crazy way we met,

Thanks for sharing Heather! I found your site back when you were waiting on Allie's adoption to be final. I really can't remember how? Thanks for inspiring us with your faith and you are a great encouragement to so many people!
You know it's meant to be when you can look back at the pictures and realize that if our men weren't chased off by those hairdos, they were going to be keepers! Ha Ha!
Connie
You guys look like you could have been on "Saved By the Bell" ... hehe! So very cute!!!! What a wonderful love story, now you have it down in print for your kids to read. Thanks for sharing and making me smile today!

Angela
Great story! You two were so cute then and still are. Hope you have many, many more happy years of marriage!
oh Heather,
you've made me cry. what a beautiful lovely story you've got.. something your children will be blessed to hear. You got married close to the same time we did. We got married '94.. and thru divorce of my parents, death of 3 grandparents, the loss of 3 miscarriages in our almost 14 years of marriage..
thanks for sharing!
What a beautiful love story! You and Donnie are truly blessed. I love your "Big" Hair. All of my pictures from the past look exactly like yours! :) Gotta Love the '80s!

Heather... I love your romantic, crazy, loving story of how you and Donnie met. You are blessed to have one another... God brought you together from almost the beginning!!! Glad you will be together until you meet again in Heaven for all eternity!
You two are perfect together!!! I loved seeing these pictures. Like I have told you before you have a beautiful family. It's not only your physical appearance but your spirits just shine! Thanks for sharing on this day. I have a post but I'm not sure if I want to put it up yet. My anniversary is Wed. and I may wait until then.....I don't know.
See ya soon Heather,
Kelley
What a wonderful story of love.
Thank you for sharing your journey and all the great pictures.
It is a very beautiful post.
I love this post! It is a great story. It really reminds me of how Joe and I met. I believe that being friends before a relationship makes the relationship so much stronger.
What fun it was to look at the pictures. Oh, the 80's and hair. Those were the days......
You make a great couple.
Heather, this is just the neatest story. It's a classic, American story of kids growing up together, keeping in touch, and getting married. You both look like the boy and girl next door type. You two look more mature as the pictures go on, but it doesn't look like you've aged a bit! You two are beautiful and so are the children. What a wonderful story and God was just prodding the both of you along from the very beginning. He had your mate picked out for you since the crib. How cool is that?!! I love it.
Oh I remember the "kiddie" shots from Jacob's site. You and Donnie were destined for one another, what a beautiful love story! I knew we had something in common, March 29 is Wayne and I wedding anniversary (married 22yrs) and also the day our Bree (who we are in the process of adopting) was BORN!!!! What a special day it will ALWAYS BE for us!!
Thank you for sharing those beautiful pictures (yes they are beautiful despite the BIG HAIR) and taking us down memory lane on the MARRIAGE MONDAY
I remember you sharing that sweet story and pictures on Jacobs site.I thought at that time and still do - how I would have loved to of had someone like that by me since the beginning. Your love for each other is very much admired.
With Love,
Allison (Allie)
Your story brings tears to my eyes. Thanks for sharing all those precious details. It's amazing that you two knew each other as babies!!!
I'm so sorry you lost a child. Yet, you've stayed strong in your love through that tragic time. That's a testimony of the love of God in your lives.
I enjoyed this quote: “True love is friendship -- caught on fire.”
It's so nice to meet you Heather! Thanks for joining us for Marriage Monday today. :~D
Hugs, e-Mom @ Chrysalis
Heather, I love ya'lls story! The pictures are just great, I did'nt think your hair was too big, I like you in curls. I can sure see the boys in you both. Just seeing those pictures, I think Jacob looks more like you, and I see Donnie alot in Brandon. Thanks for taking us down memory lane. I really enjoyed how you came to be one. You are both very lucky! Hugs from Fort Worth!
Thank you for the beautiful love story. And may I say, I think you AND Donnie are both very lucky. You make such a lovely couple and you have such beautiful children. May you have many, many happy years together.
What a neat story! Fun to read of how your parents kept in contact and how you finally got together. You two make a beautiful couple and I think your sons have the same great smile that you have.
Thanks for sharing your story and may God continue to be the greatest blessing that you praise and worship everyday.
I LOVE the pictures of you two, your relationship is a true testimony! What a Blessing for us to witness such a Loving Husband & Wife and Happy Children! Thank you for sharing your sweet, cute story! Your Whole Life's story is a Blessing to all who "know" you.
Have a Great Monday!
Much Love,
Audra
What an adorable story and couple you to make.
I just loved reading this.
Lori
Oh Heather,
I just loved the way you shared your story, I can't hear it enough and the pictures were GREAT!
You are so beautiful, INSIDE and OUT!! I can see the love of Jesus all over you and Donnie.
I wore my hair just like you, my hair is thick and curly too! (Now with the flat iron, I've got it all tamed down!)
Now, let's see, we'll have to start introducing our kids and grandkids to each other. Start showing the boys pictures of Grace and Kayla OK? I'll work on them over here!(They already fell in love with Jacob, they have seen him and your others sons so many times on this computer, they think they are relatives now!) Would that be wild or what?
LOVE YOU, so glad you joined us today♥
Heather your story is so sweet and touching. I think your so lucky to have found love like that. I think Devin looks like Donnie when he was a little boy. I love your big hair, I had those days to. I had to pay to make my hair look like that. I love the little kiss, now that is a story for your kids and grandkids. You have a picture to back it up. Have a good week.
Carmen
What a beautiful story, made my eyes fill when you shared all the ups and downs that you have weathered.
You make a gorgeous couple.
~blessings.
What a beautiful story! You two are a gorgeous couple! I loved the photos of your and your hubby over the years. I'm so glad you two are nurturing such a wonderful family. I'll be checking back often:)
What a beautiful post! Your marriage is so wonderful and I am so happy to read about someone who truly loves their spouse and gives God the glory. Loved seeing all the pics and hearing about your life together. I think I had the same black and white polka dot outfit. Was it a one piece with a belt. Oh the early 90's had style!!
Blessings to you in your life and your marriage.
What a beautiful post. I have seen that picture of you tackling Donnie for that first kiss and it made me laugh out loud then and again this morning. More than anything I love the way God has used your strength as a couple to be an example to others. You have survived so many terrible things that would cause stress but you followed God and it turned out. All my prayers and love.
Heather, your story brought me to tears mainly because the love you have for your husband is still going strong after so many years. God bless the Duckworth family.
Hi, your marriage sounds wonderful and I am so happy for you. I have followed Jacob's story and now your "Froggers" for so long now but I am not sure I've ever said a word. I don't know how to get your email but I wanted to tell you that I was sitting outside on my front stoop the other day, lonely and melancholy, and when I looked up, a red cardinal had flown up to the wire overhead. I said "Hi Jacob" and it made me feel a little better. That's all I wanted to say! Thank you!! Have a great day!!
Karen
Heather, What a great story! I'm so glad I stopped by and was able to enjoy it with you.
Thanks for sharing! I read that you met when you were babies back on Jacob's page but it's neat seeing the pictures and reading more of the details.
I am going to have to participate in some of these memes. I just have to find the time :-)
Heather -- You and Donnie are a fabulous couple! I enjoyed reading your meeting story.
Heather ~ You two are so cute together, kind of sickening, but cute! Ha-Ha! You know I'm kidding! Your story is definitely a "God thing". He knew what He was doing that day and I thank Him for making you both such great people, who do great things. Yet again, your post gave me tears, but I aways walk away from the computer feeling all warm and fuzzy inside after reading your posts and I love it! Your blog is the best thing since sliced bread.

P.S. Love the "Big Hair"!!
You guys are so sweet and so pure! I pray for only the best for you, all the joy that life has to offer, and of, course, everlasting life and joy for eternity. God bless you guys!
Well, that made me tear up! I wasn't expecting that today. Wow. You have really known each other your whole life! How cool is that? And to even have pictures at such a young age! I love how God brought you together again after all of those years. My hubby and I didn't meet until we were both out of college (though we have always said that was for the best...we never would have paid attention to one another prior to that), but sometimes I just cannot believe how God brought our lives together. I will forever be grateful for His perfect plan which many times I could not see when I was dating the "wrong ones". Anyway, may God continue to bless your marriage, your family, your heritage!
Reba
What a beautiful couple you are and a sweet story to go along. God new what he was doing when he put the two of you together. He new what an asset the two of you would be in sharing his word through your life story. I to have been blessed with a wonderful husband. Haven't known him since we were babies but we have been together since we started dating at 16. My high school sweatheart is still the love of my life. We eloped after high school graduation in September 1988. So, this year we will be celebrating our 20th anniversary. God has truly blessed us in all aspects of our marriage and I am looking forward to another 20+ years.....
Your love story is so rare/one of a kind.
I think it is wonderful how you basically grew up with Donnie in your life. How cute.
I love the pictures. You two look like the perfect couple :)
I haven't been able to get on here in a few days, but I wanted to let you know I am very sorry to hear cancer took another child. It breaks my heart every time I hear that. Sierra's family will be in my prayers.
I am sitting here, with tears in my eyes, as I read your love story. It was beautiful.
This is my first time to your blog but I will be back.
What a sweet story! Thank you for sharing.
I was sitting here at the computer just hurting for Sierra's family. Then I come here and read this amazing love story. The tears are happy though.Thank you so much for sharing.
What a fun story! I must say I do LOVE the hair!!! The bangs were the bomb!!! I think you've gotten more beautiful with age!!!
wow what a great story, thanks for sharing
LOVE the pictures! Thanks.
I LOVE your story - you always write so well that I feel like I am there with you! I feel the same way about my husband, and he is truly my soulmate and best friend.
You and Donnie have had more than your fair share of difficult times and I am glad that they have brought you closer together. So many times intense stress can kill even the relationships we think are the most strong. I think because you two have always "frogged" together, and I mean truly frogged, it drew you closer to each other - and there is no better place to be!!
Thanks for always sharing with us!
Love from WV,
Susan
Such beautiful pictures. You guuys look like Ken and Barbie! I'm sure you've probably heard that before. What a great story you have.
I just love this story!! It could be a movie. :) I remember hearing it before (reading it), but there are a few more details this time around. :) You are such a beautiful couple and family. Though you have had your hardships, or tough things to deal with, you can clearly see how blessed you are. That is the best part to me! I find myself wishing I had a beautiful story like that, minus the cancer and ultimate loss of a child.
I can't help but feel, though, that when I see you all, I see God, too. He is there with you, just like he is with us all, if we just look. May God continue to bless you!!
